Grains of sand, individually they are nothing. But together they can make up entire beaches or the robust cement that our buildings rely on to stand.

The Universe is like a beach, endless stars and planets that look like insignificant grains of sand from a distance. An individual star is nothing, but the combined strength of them all is what lights up entire galaxies and creates life. One star would be unlikely to be able to create life. But with trillions of them it is a given that living beings will eventually emerge.

The point is that individual things no matter how small or big are insignificant. It is only when the power of the many is at play when things start to matter. There are only a few things that individually are significant, like our Universe or the fundamental laws of physics. Strength lies in numbers, strength belongs to the many. One mighty person could never be more significant than a million people.

Cherish your insignificance, it is a gift. If something as small and pathetic as an individual person was significant to our reality then there wouldn’t be societies, art, love, complex systems, stars or even our own planet. If you were anything in this Universe then everything would be painfully small and uninteresting. There wouldn’t be any mysteries to solve or challenges to tackle.

Insignificance is a gift from the stars.
